Rivers are fascinating natural phenomena in both summer and winter. Contrary to what many people think, the flora and fauna on display in the warm months does not simply disappear in winter. LIsten carefully and you will be able to hear the sounds of birds singing and ducks making their way along the water's edge. The most iconic river in the region around Kitzbühel is the Großache. It flows from St. Johann in Tirol via Kirchdorf and Kössen all the way to the Chiemsee lake over the border in Bavaria. In winter it becomes a gentle, semi-frozen stream. There are many winter hikes to choose from between Erpfendorf, Kirchdorf and St. Johann in Tirol.

Trail description
From the centre of St. Johann in Tirol and Kirchdorf, or from the tourist information office in Erpfendorf, walk down to the trail along the banks of the Großache and simply follow the river as far as you want and as far as your legs will take you (don't forget that you have to walk back as well!).
