Trail description

Strap on your snowshoes and walk down the gently ridge towards Isel River. Nestled amongst alder trees, winter here offers a unique glimpse of wildlife as tracks in the snow reveal the story of their movements. On the riverside fields you will be cheered by encounters with the Water Ouzel, a tiny passerine that is as well called the White-throated Dipper. This smallest of avian divers is able to dive and swim underwater for up to one minute. Sharp-eyed snowshoers might see that the snow along this riparian habitat is crisscrossed with the prints of dozens of animals, from roe deer and stags over rabbits to foxes. This snowshoe walk will add a hearty physical dimension to your appreciation and understanding of a truly wild winter habitat. You will learn about survival strategies—physiological adaptations that allow the animals to remain in the mountains during the cold of winter.

Please Note: Be prepared to adjust your activity based on current conditions. As a general rule, if there is fresh snow, conditions may be better suited for snowshoeing; if the snow is old and well-travelled, it may be better for winter walking.
