The majestic Wilder Kaiser Mountains accompany hikers on this attractive snowshoe hike through the Hefferthorn-Fellhorn-Sonnenberg Nature Reserve, where there are also many wild animals (please be careful not to get too close at the feeding station in the forest). On the summit of Prostkogel Peak hikers can say "Prost!" with a cup of hot tea before embarking on the descent back along the way they came. In winter the appropriately named "Teufelsgasse" sould be avoided because of its dangerous sections.

Trail description
Starting at Gasthof Altmühl Inn, the route leads north as far as the last building (stables), through the gate and along wide trail No. 5 into the forest. At an elevation of 860 meters, there is a barrier across the trail. Continue past this barrier and along the wide trail. At roughly 920 meters altitude, there is a game feeding station with a special stand for observing winter wildlife. Continue up to an elevation of 980 meters (signposted) and along a narrow trail into the nature reserve. After crossing a stile, the hike continues up to open meadowland at 1,040 meters altitude, then climbs gently up to the fence at 1,100 meters and follows this fence to Sprissleralm Alpine Pasture Hut (elev. 1,226m, signposted). The terrain is now flat, with just a few undulating sections, as you head eastwards along trail No. 5 to the point where the trail divides (elev. 1,226m, signposted) and heads to Marcheralm Alpine Pasture Hut (elev. 1,180m) and Prostalm Alpine Pasture Hut (elev. 1,180m). From there, complete the short climb to the summit of 1,244-meter Prostkogel Peak with its large mountaintop cross.
Return to your starting point by the same way you came.
Please Note: Snowshoe hikers are advised to avoid the aptly named "Teufelsgasse" (‘devil’s lane’) in the winter as this area narrows to a tight valley where avalanches are prone, so be confident in your risk evaluation before heading too far back. Be prepared to adjust your activity based on current conditions. As a general rule, if there is fresh snow, conditions may be better suited for snowshoeing; if the snow is old and well-travelled, it may be better for winter walking.
