This snowshoe walk is one of the winter highlights in the Wipptal Valley. It leads into the Padauner Hochtal, a remote valley which feels a million miles away from civilisation, up onto the Padauner Kogel mountain (2,066 metres). There is a huge crucifix at the summit, where walkers can look forward to wonderful views across the Wipptal Valley all the way to Innsbruck, the Brenner Pass, the Stubai Alps and the mighty Olperer mountain.

Trail description
The starting point of this snowshoe walk is the car park next to the road in Padaun. Walk along the road south-west further into the Padauner Hochtal valley until the signposted summer trail no. 82 branches off to the right across the meadows at the Larcherhof farm. The trail climbs steeply through the mountain forest, and you will need to use your hands a little on a rocky step. The trail turns north, passes a small cable car used to supply a hut in the mountains, and the forest slowly thins out. The trail then climbs gently along the broad mountain ridge to the crucifix at the top of the Padauner Kogel, where fabulous views await.
The descent takes place on the north side of the mountain. You will quickly reach the forest. Here, too, you have to be careful on the steep parts of the trail, especially at the beginning on the Rittengrat ridge. At the bottom of the forest, the trail turns southeast and, once in the meadows, leads directly to the Gasthof Steckholzer inn. Stop there for a break, or walk back to the car park.
