Maria Waldrast is the highest monastery in Europe, at 1,600 metres above sea level, and the spectacular setting for this winter hike at the foot of the mighty Serles mountain with views of the Zillertal and Tux Alps, the Patscherkofel mountain to the south of Innsbruck and the craggy Kalkkögel mountains all the way to the ski resort of Schlick 2000 in Fulpmes. The hike itself is 12km in length and the ideal preparation for a hearty meal at the monastery's own restaurant and café.

Trail description
The hike begins at the start of the cross-country skiing trail in Maria Waldrast, which runs parallel to the hiking path. The first section is up and down through open meadows towards Schön Anger and then (following the signs) along the cross-country skiing trail towards Schönberg-Mieders. After climbing over the mountain ridge, there is a further gentle uphill section to the Miederer-Ochsenhütte and then back down to the Maria Waldrast monastery at 1,600 metres. Those who still have energy to burn can walk to the "Altes Serleskreuz" 500 metres below the car park at the monastery.
