Hochfilzen is best known as a mecca for fans of cross-country skiing, but there is plenty of excellent winter hiking in this small resort in the Loferer and Leogang Rocky Mountains. This winter hike up to the Hoametzlhütte hut can be combined with a fun toboggan ride back down into the valley. The other alternative is to walk back down and enjoy the magnificent mountain views.

Trail description
This hike starts in the centre of Hochfilzen and leads to the Maria Schnee pilgrimage church. Opposite the church take the "Herrengasse" winter hiking trail between cross-country skiing trails towards Warming. After passing through the underpass take the pavement on the left to the "Hörlbauer" and "Glaagut" farmsteads. Then turn off between the two buildings left onto the "Tennweg" trail and continue to the Hoametzlhütte hut. After a drink and a snack in the hut, hikers can either ride back down into the valley on a toboggan or walk back down to the starting point. Those who decide to toboggan down can take the free ski bus from Warming back into the centre of the village. The toboggan run is floodlit every evening until midnight.
