Ski touring and snowboarding off piste are among the most beautiful and enjoyable experiences in Tirol. Scroll down to see our key tips on how to stay safe and have fun while respecting the natural environment.
Venturing away from marked ski pistes demands good fitness and the ability to ski or snowboard in a variety of terrain and conditions. When it comes to planning your next adventure, make sure you always have a bit of energy in reserve – be honest with yourself about your fitness and ability. These should be major factors in helping you choose a ski tour which is right for you when ot comes to distance, difficulty and terrain. Make sure you have an alternative as well, maybe another mountain nearby, so you can change your plans if you need to.
- Everyone heading off-piste must have the following equipment at all times: an avalanche probe, a shovel, an avalanche beacon and a first aid set. Make sure to check the avalanche bulletin before you set off. Avoid dangerous terrain. If you are not sure about the conditions, it is better to turn around and head back.
- Plan time for plenty of breaks to eat and drink – ski touring is about enjoying being in the mountains, not pushing yourself to the limit. Make sure you leave plenty of space between each other as you walk up and ski down – this reduces the risk of avalanches. Avoid falling. Small groups are better than large groups. Make sure you are aware of other skiers and snowboarders using the same terrain.
- Remember you are venturing into the natural habitat of alpine plants and animals. Act like any good guest and be respectful at all times.
