Far from the madding crowds, the small resort in St. Jakob im Defereggental combines great skiing with absolute peace and quiet – not forgetting, of course, wonderful views of the surrounding mountain peaks up to and over 3,000 metres in altitude.
Situated deep in the idyllic Defereggen Valley in East Tirol, on the edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the family-friendly Skizentrum St. Jakob im Defereggental is about as far from mass tourism as you can imagine. Instead of long lift queues and pumping après-ski music, all skiers and snowboarders will see and hear is the fabulous natural landscape and the sound of silence. The network of slopes between 1,400m and 2,525m is blessed with a thick covering of snow from late November until April and offers runs catering for all abilities. Children and beginners tend to gather on the gentle slopes near the bottom of the cable car, while freestylers and boarders are drawn to the "defRaggn" snowpark. Speed freaks will find a race course to test their skill and nerve. The resort also has a number of cosy huts next to the piste serving traditional local food.
