Excellent basecamp for groups holidaying in East Tirol
Austrian Alpine Club, Matrei in Osttirol Division
Far from the madding crowd, well off the beaten track, lies the Grünseehütte. This self-catering hut located at the end of the Tauerntal Valley in the Granatspitz Mountains is surrounded by several lakes and easy-to-climb mountains. While drivers heading from East Tirol to Salzburg whizz into the Felbertauern tunnel a kilometre below, groups of friends and large families can relax up here and enjoy the fabulous views. The hut was renovated in summer 2019 and has a cooking area downstairs combined with a number of bedrooms upstairs. It sleeps up to 15 people. No food is available at the hut – visitors must bring their own.
