The Birkkarhütte (2,640 metres) is a small wooden hut near the summit of the Birkkarspitze peak in the Karwendel Mountains. It provides emergency shelter for hiker and climbers who get into difficulty.

Service and hot food cannot be expected here. The food on your table will be that which you have brought with you in your rucksack. But there are sometimes situations in the mountains when you are glad to find shelter in an emergency. One such shelter is this little wooden cabin on the Schlauchkarsattel ridge beneath the summit of the Birkkarspitze. There is only limited space for overnight stays, but after complete renovation works in 2000, it is at least very stable. There are no beds, no running water, no blankets, no electricity and no cooking facilities. The amenities consist of a table and two benches on which you can lie down if need be. At a squeeze, it can sleep up to five people. As one would expect, overnight stays are free of charge.
How to get to the Birkkarhütte
From Karwendelhaus into Schlauchkar, walk through here in a long right-hand curve along the Schlauchkarsattel ridge. Turn left here and walk around an outcrop. Allow 15 to 20 minutes to walk from the Birkkarhütte to the peak.
