This 12-kilometre hike of intermediate difficulty is a great way to explore the peaks and pastures in the south of the Kelchsau region. There are 1,150 vertical metres of uphill to complete between the starting point and the top of the Torhelm, the highest mountain in the Kitzbühel Alps which can be reached on foot from valley to summit. The reward for all that hard work is a wonderful view of the Zillertal Alps. The route back takes hikers past a series of small mountain lakes and idyllic huts. The starting and finishing point of the hike is the Tiefentalalm. This eye-catching hut dates back fact, almost 500 years old and is actually considered to be the oldest alpine hut in the Kitzbühel Alps.

Trail description
The approach is via the toll road in Kelchsau to the Tiefentalalm car park. The hike begins there. The route initially follows a farm track into the valley to the Oberkaralm at 1,612 metres above sea level. A steeper but well-marked mountain path leads from there to the Öfeleralm at 1,988 metres and on through stony scree to the summit of the Torhelm (2,494 metres). Surefootedness is important on this section. Once at the top, hikers are rewarded with an outstanding view of the Kitzbühel and Zillertal Alps. The descent to the Öfeleralm is identical to the ascent. From there, you could walk back to the car park via the Oberkaralm (shortest route). However, the variant on the high-level trail 77/1 via the Regenfeldalm is more beautiful and varied. To do this, turn left at the Öfeleralm and hike northwards along the mountainside at roughly the same altitude. The path leads past several beautiful lakes. After reaching the Regenfeldalm, the trail descends to the Foissachalm (neither of these huts are open to the public) and from there to the right on a steep path down to the car park. Important! Please be aware that on this hike there are no huts or other places serving food and drink.
