With its rocky summit, the Guffert mountain towers high above the village of Steinberg am Rofan – and can be reached via a challenging trail leading up the southern flank of this mighty peak. The view from the top is fantastic, taking in the Rofan Mountains, the Karwendel Mountains, the Zillertal Alps and the Ötztal Alps as well as the Hohe Tauern Mountains and even the alpine foothills of Bavaria. The trail is steep and requires a little climbing in places. Hikers need good overall fitness and must be sure-footed in alpine terrain. In the summer months we recommend starting early to avoid the heat of the day.

Trail description
The hike begins at the Gasthaus Waldhäusl in Unterberg. Turn right away from the road over a bridge over the Mühlegger Bach stream, then head up through wooded terrain. You will cross a farm track several times. After the third crossing keep right and turn off into the open terrain. As you head uphill you will cross a stream before the path leads up over rock steps and scree (steep in places) through mountain pine forests. Keep to the right and pass a rocky head. The trail continues upwards through mountain pines, which heat up the area in summer. Pass the fork in the trail to the Schmiedtquelle spring and continue on the trail to the summit. Steep and difficult passages follow up to the summit plateau, which can be reached with a little easy climbing where there are steel wires and handholds. At the top of the Guffert you can look forward to outstanding panoramic views. As there are no huts or other places for refreshments along the way, so be sure to take plenty of water and provisions with you. After a rest and a snack at the summit, return along the same route back to the starting point at the Gasthaus Waldhäusl inn, a good place for a meal.
