In the far south of the Alpbachtal Valley stands the mighty Großer Galtenberg (2,424 metres), the highest peak in the region. It is ideal for a bike & hike adventure, beginning at the Greither Graben near Inneralpbach. From here to the top of the mountain it is 1,300 vertical metres of uphill – though all that effort is well worth it considering the fantastic views of the Zillertal Alps and the Stubai Alps as well as the Hohe Tauern Mountains, the Kitzbühel Grass Mountains and the Karwendel Mountains. There are no real technical difficulties, with just a little bit of scrambling at the top to contend with.

To reach the starting point at the former Gasthof Leitner in the Greither Graben, approach by mountain bike or car from Alpbach towards Inneralpbach, over a bridge and shortly after turn right at the fork in the road before heading over a bridge again and continuing for around a kilometre to the car park. From there, pass the barrier and ride into the valley along mountain bike route 306. This trail leads along the west of the stream, gently uphill, towards the Farmkehralm hut through forests and meadows. At the Greitalm hut (no food & drink served) head left, then somewhat later ignore the trail to "Farmkehralm-Niederleger" and stay on the main trail. After a few corners you will reach the Farmkehralm hut (1,771 metres). Leave the bike here and pull on your hiking boots.
It is here at the hut that the hiking part of the adventure begins, up to the Großer Galtenberg (2,424 metres) in an easterly direction. Take the left-hand fork at the first signpost. From there the trail becomes steeper and has an increasing number of switchback corners. As hikers ascend the views become more spectacular and the trail becomes rockier. Right at the end there are a few large rocks which must be climbed; hikers must be sure-footed. Make sure you plan a little extra time to enjoy the view at the top.
The descent is to the south, where a narrow trail leads over a ridge to the Kleiner Galtenberg (2,318 metres). This little diversion only requires an additional 45 vertical metres. From the summit of the Kleiner Galtenberg descend in an easterly direction and, after around 200 metres, follow the signs to the Farmkehr-Hochalm hut. Hop back on the bike and whizz down into the valley.
