This scenic circular walk leads from St. Jakob in Haus up onto the Buchensteinwand mountain (1,462 metres), high above the Pillerseetal Valley. Most of the route offers fine views of the surrounding landscape. Up at the top of the mountain is a huge crucifix measuring 29 metres in height. You can even walk inside and climb up to the top to enjoy the view from the top of the cross. The summit of the mountain also marks the starting point of the Flower Learning Trail, a 1,600-metre-long educational path showcasing the best of the local flora. Large information boards along the trail provide information on the natural habitat and flowers native to this part of Austria.

Trail description
Leaving from the Gasthof Post in the centre of St. Jakob, take the Pfarrgasse road heading west towards Filzen. After no more than 100 metres you will get to the "Panoramaweg" branching off to the right. It leads across a number of streams before eventually reaching Filzen. Cross through a series of fields and meadows to Moosbach. There, turn sharp right onto the main road ("Landstraße") and, after 100 metres, branch off left into the village. Take the twisting "Holzerweg" towards Buchensteinwand. In a long right-hand corner in the forest you will see a narrow trail heading off right. This leads steeply up to the Buchensteinwand mountain, merging with a wide forest path on several occasions along the way. After 560 vertical metres of ascent you will reach the Alpengasthof Buchensteinwand and the huge crucifix at 1,462 metres above sea level. Enjoy the fabulous views and sample some of the local food.
The descent is in an easterly direction, initially along the Flower Learning Trail down to a small reservoir. There, head right and descend on a wide trail past the Kammbergalm hut to Flecken, a settlement east of St. Jakob. There, turn right onto the "Jakobsweg" trail. You can either descend straight down to St. Jakob or take a slight detour to the north along the "Panoramaweg" (cross over the main road), which eventually takes you back to your starting point at the Gasthof Zur Post.
