Mountain Bike Safari Stage 04: Imst – Lermoos

This stage brings you close to the Austria-Germany border and into the realm of Zugspitze Peak, Germany’s tallest mountain.

Ride Imster Bergbahnen Chair Lift atop Untermarkter Alpe. A short climb is followed by a downhill ride back down to the valley along gravel and paved roads. The climb atop Marienbergjoch Col into Außerfern Area with some steep pitches has a total vertical rise of 1,200 meters and will test your strength. Kicking off at 1,800 meters above sea level, the trail then snakes its way down to Ehrwald Basin and offers uninterrupted panoramic views of majestic Zugspitze Mountain in the northeast. In Lermoos, downhill freaks who have mastered Barbarasteig Trail on their way down from Marienbergjoch Col can tackle “Forest Thunder” on Grubigstein Mountain, a technical descent that will leave you grinning from ear to ear. Or, call it a day and enjoy the view of Zugspitze Mountain—it’s a stunner.

Trail description

Starting Point: Imster Bergbahn • +43.5412.66322 • www.imster-bergbahnen.at

The top terminal of Imster Bergbahnen Chair Lift heralds the start of a short stretch of climbing, gaining some 100 meters in height, followed by a mellow descent that curves its way down eastward and deposits you at the foot of another short climb, close to Starkenbergersee Lake. The last part of the descent down to Tarrenz has some tight turns. Cross Fern Pass Road to get to the quieter, eastern side of the valley. Follow this route to the northeast until you reach the village of Nassereith. From here, the trail runs to the east and begins the long, leg-sapping ascent atop Marienbergjoch Col. There are some steep pitches to negotiate close to the old sled run, taking you to the col, 1,800 meters above sea level. A downhill ride coasts down to Ehrwald Basin. Shortly after Sunnalm, the route splits into the main trail and a more technical singletrack option (S1-S2). Both trails lead to Biberwier and across Moos or along Wachtersteig to Lermoos, the destination end of this ride.

Finishing Point: Lermoos
