This mountain bike ride of 37.5 kilometres leads through the Karwendel Mountains from the Achenwald near Achenkirch uphill to the Rotwandhütte in the idyllic Bächental Valley. The Bächental Valley is known for its slate, which is used to make "stone oil". Riders then cross over the German border and pay a visit to the glistening Sylvensteinstausee lake before taking the classic Munich-Venice cycle trail back to Achenkirch. Riders should have sufficient fitness for 2,500 vertical metres of climbing. Remember to take enough food - there are not many places along the way to stop off.

Trail description
From the Hagenwirt car park on the Achenseestraße road, about one kilometre west of Achenwald near Achenkirch, route 466 first leads through a wooded area towards Pitzkopf. Follow the gravel road for 5.5 kilometres, always evenly uphill through several hairpin bends to the Brettersbergalm hut at 1,320 metres. From there, cycle further south, past the turn-off to the Pitzalm hut. Another 200 metres of altitude difference must be mastered up to the Rotwandhütte (closed). After the Rotwandhütte, the route descends again via the Rotwandalm-Niederleger to the Baieralm and the Zotenalm below the Raberskopf mountain. Shortly after the Zotenalm turn sharp left and cycle in several hairpin bends for 5.2 kilometres into the Bächental Valley. There, at the two huts, turn sharp right again and cycle back in a northerly direction to the Forsthaus Aquila lodge. The route then leads along the Dürrach stream across the German border, first mainly flat, then downhill towards Fall at the Sylvensteinsee reservoir. After 6.9 kilometres, before the small waterfall at the Dürrach estuary, turn right onto the Achensee cycle path "München Venezia", cross the Schürpfengraben and Rudersgraben and finally follow the Walchen tributary back to the Austrian border. After the border, the cycle path leads along the federal road and past the Achenkirch customs office next to the Achenseestraße road for 3.2 kilometres back to Achenwald.
