The Karlsbader Hütte is a majestic mountain hut at 2,260 metres above sea level at the foot of the Große Sandspitze in the Lienz Dolomites. Surounded by numerous peaks, it is located next to a lake, the Laserzsee, and can be reached via a tough mountain bike ride starting in the village of Tristach near Lienz. From valley to hut there are 1,597 vertical metres of climbing, with a section on a paved road followed by a flatter gravel approach to the hut which demands good bike-handling on the descent.
