Trail description
Take the Sonnalmbahn cable car from Berwang or the Almkopfbahn cable car from Bichlbach up to the Heiterwanger Hochalm hut at 1,600 metres above sea level. It is just a short ride along a gravel road to the start of the singletrack trail, which is at the first corner on the gravel road from the hut ("Schretterkurve" corner).
Riders who want to ride up using pedal power instead of taking the cable car can take trail number 879 (3.4 kilometres and 270 vertical metres of climbing on a smooth forest road).
Two switchback corners in the upper section require good bike-handling skills. After the animal-feeding area, the trail (around 75 cm wide) winds its way through forest terrain. There are no more technical challenges down to the finish, with most of the riding on gravel with a few roots. After around two kilometres you will reach the end of the trail at the Thanellerkarlift reservoir.
Tip! The Heiterwanger Hochalm hut is popular with mountain bikers, hikers and daytrippers. It serves good regional food.
