Imst – Gurgltal Valley – Fernsteinsee Castle

This easy ride is ideal for all the family and starts in the centre of Imst. The 30 km route described here forms part of the popular "Via Claudia Augusta" long-distance cycle trail and passes through the meadows of the Gurgltal Valley as far as Nassereith. The highest point on the ride lies at 1212m altitude.

  • Fernstein Castle is perched at 948m, directly on the shores of the majestic Fernsteinsee Lake. Cyclists can ride through the impressive gateway leading to the castle and see the tracks of carts once drawn along this path in Roman times.
  • Fernsteinsee Lake is a natural jewel and the perfect place to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The nearby mountain pine forest contains trees up to 25m high.

Trail description

The ride begins in the centre of Imst and leads along the Via Claudia Augusta cycle trail, through the Gurgltal Valley, past Tarrenz and down to the valley floor. From Strad, which forms part of the village of Tarrenz, the trail continues through a flat and shady forest almost as far as Nassereith. From Nassereith, follow the mountain bike signs towards the Fernpass. The valley becomes narrower and the trail becomes steeper as you ride towards the Fernpass mountain pass.
