Mountain Bike Ride
Kaiserwinkl

This 40-kilometre mountain bike ride near the Austrian-German border leads through the beautiful valleys and spectacular mountain landscapes of the Kaiser Mountains. Leaving from Kössen in the Kaiserwinkl region, it passes through forests and meadows on the way to Kirchdorf in Tirol. Rushing streams, forest trails, cycle paths and quiet roads all feature on this adventure with just 600 metres of elevation gain. Despite the relatively flat profile, riders will need good overall fitness to complete the 40-kilometre loop. There are several charging stations for e-bikes along the route.

Trail description

Starting point is the centre of Kössen. From here, take the local road in a south-easterly direction past the Adventure Club Kaiserwinkl to the Kitzbüheler Ache river. Shortly afterwards, cross the river and the road. There is a short ascent to the main road towards Kitzbühel. Stay on this road until the turn-off "248 Klausenberg-Eggenalm". Then follow the mountain bike route number 248 uphill again to just over 1,000 metres above sea level. Cycle in a southerly direction above the valley until you reach the fork in the forest road with the sign "249 Straubingerhaus- Eggenalm". Turn right here and cycle the next five kilometres downhill towards Erpfendorf. On cycle path number 17 the route now follows the Kitzbüheler Ache river. Follow the cycle path signs "St. Johann" or "Kirchdorf" until you reach the bridge over the Kitzbüheler Ache in Kirchdorf. After crossing the bridge, take the road through the village, past the church and on to Gasteig. Now continue on the road towards Kössen, Walchsee and Schwendt. From here the route climbs slightly for only about one kilometre. Then the route goes slightly downhill, past the hamlet of Griesenau and on through the forest, before shortly after the bridge over the stream the cycle path "Steinerweg" branches off to the left. Cross the stream again and continue on the gravelled cycle path towards Schwendt. After about one kilometre a narrow tarmac road begins. Here, at a small yellow chapel, do not follow the cycle path signs to Schwendt, but instead stay on this road. Keep following the signs to "Kössen" or "Walchsee". In Bichlbach the path branches off to the right towards Kössen. The route now runs partly in the forest, later through the golf course. Keep left after the golf course and turn right again immediately after crossing the stream. After a little more than one kilometre you will reach the bridge over the Kitzbüheler Ache or Großache river. Now it is only a few hundred metres back to the starting point in the centre of Kössen.
