The charming village of Walchsee is located in the Kaiserwinkl region and takes its name from the pretty lake which has become a symbol of the region and even features on the village crest in the form of a blue wave.
Such blue waves can be found not only on the village crest but in the heart of the village itself, which is right next to the shore and draws many watersports enthusiasts keen on boat trips, sailing and surfing on the 100 hectares of water surrounded by lush green meadows and rocky mountain peaks. The Walchsee is also the only lake in Tirol which permits waterskiing with motorboats. The Aqua Fun Park on the eastern shore is great for families and features a climbing wall, trampoline, slides, blobbing and beach volleyball. While the kids have fun, parents can relax with a cool summer drink at the Beach Bar.
Visitors will find a large swimming and sunbathing area with sports facilities, WCs, changing cabins as well as two smaller swimming areas on the eastern and southern shores. Restaurants, a campsite, playgrounds and boat hire are all available. One of the most popular attractions for teenagers is the Ice-Berg, a huge inflatable climbing tower on the lake which brave souls can scramble up before jumping off into the water. During the summer months the lake’s waters are pleasantly warm.
The area around the Walchsee is home to many rare plants such as wild cranberries and bog rosemary growing on the small moorland peninsula on the western shore of the lake. This peninsula, in combination with an area known as the Schwemm to the north-east of the village, makes up the large section of moorland in North Tirol. Seldom-found birds and plants which call this area home include the common snipe and sundew, a flesh-eating plant which takes its name from glistening drops of mucilage at the tip of each tentacle that resemble drops of morning dew. A large section has been named a Natura 2000 nature reserve and is protected under law.
