This event is your best chance to taste the pride of Wildschönau: The famous ‘Krautinger’, a special, intensely flavourful variety of White Beet. For one week in late September, the vegetable is celebrated at this festival in all its incarnations.
In the past, White Beet (also known as May turnip or autumn turnip) was a staple food for the residents of Wildschönau Valley. Rich in vitamins, the simple root vegetable was the base of their diet and many delicious recipes where created. Eventually, the farmers came upon the idea of distilling White Beet into schnapps, and this was when the Krautinger Beet Schnapps was born—a famous "cure-for-all". Today, Wildschönau is a designated “Region of Culinary Excellence”. From September 24 through October 01, 2023, the White Beet is celebrated at this festival in all its incarnations. Restaurants deck out their menus with libations, soups and other turnip dishes. Plus, there will be a rich cultural program and “farm-to-farm” walks with visits to local Krautinger farms. Moreover, the Museum Fair with Krautinger Fest takes place on Harvest Festival Sunday, October 01, 2023, and is celebrated with a church service, followed by a grand parade of the village. Festivities are rounded out with the presentation of the Krautinger Beet Schnapps of the Year. Plus, there will be toe-tapping musical entertainment and tasty food. The last crafts market of the season will take place on September 28, 2023, from 12:00 noon to 5:00pm.
