Deeply rooted in tradition, the St Leonard’s Ride is a fixture in the autumnal events calendar of Oberndorf in Tirol, rounded out by a delightful fall festival with crafts market and live music.
St Leonard's Ride is a celebration of Leonard of Limoges, the patron saint of horses and cattle, observed in various towns across Tirol and Bavaria, Germany. The ride is an excellent opportunity to relive ancient traditions and customs in an authentic way by watching the procession of elaborately harnessed horses draw decorated wagons on their way to the parish church.
In Oberndorf, the event begins, as per tradition, with the formation of the horses at 10:00am. Thirty minutes later, the parade winds its way through the village center. The most eagerly awaited moment of the day is certainly the blessing of the horses and their breeders, which takes place after the parade at 11:30am. The fall festival offers a tiny crafts market and stalls selling seasonal signature dishes. The local brass band and “Die Blechbuam” band are out in force as well, adding to the festive atmosphere. Parking is provided at the ample car park of M-Preis supermarket. The St Leonard's Ride is organised by the Noriker Horse Breeding Association Wilder Kaiser and environs.
