The tradition of lighting Sacred Heart Fires is cherished a lot in East Tirol’s Hochpustertal and Lesachtal Valleys. In June, the mountains will come to life in a fiery haze in this annual ritual.
Setting alight the mountains and slopes around Kartitsch is a spectacular annual ritual. As darkness begins to fall around 9:00pm, torches are lit up on Öfenspitze Mountain and Kinigat Peak in Hollbrucker Tal and windows at homes in the village are lit with pretty decorations. Karnischer Kamm Ridge is spectacularly set alight by more than 3,000 individual fires that are lit by about 100 volunteers. Starting at noon, they begin to carry the torches to the top of the mountains.
