A 270-year tradition comes to live in February once again, when Nassereith celebrates the farewell to winter with its spectacular "Schellerlaufen" Run.
This ancient custom, based upon the fight between the bear, representing spring, and the bear beater, symbolizing winter, is celebrated every third year. The Schellerlaufen was declared a “World Cultural Heritage” by UNESCO, in 2012. This old rite holds the entire village under its spell for the whole week and transforms the small community into a carnival stronghold. The Nassereith “Schellerlaufen” Run is noted for being the most flamboyant carnival celebration in the entire Alpine region.
The "Schellerlaufen" Run begins at 12:00 noon. The graceful figures in the “Beautiful Pageant Trains” named “Kehrer, Roller, Scheller and Spritzer” (“sweeper, jumper, ringer and sprayer”) impress visitors with their unique handcrafted and elaborately embroidered robes. Along with witches, charnel houses, elaborately designed floats, and numerous other traditional masks and figures, make the Schellerlaufen an unforgettable experience in Nassereith.
