A kaleidoscope of colours takes over the sky at Tannheimertal Valley in January, with balloons ascending and floating over the snowy mountainscape during the Balloon Festival for three weeks.
Some 25 balloons will ascend and float over the beautiful mountains and valleys for three weeks in January 2024 during the International Balloon Festival. Get there early to see them all lift off and glow in the morning sun. By early morning, the skies are dotted with the bright colours of the balloons as they float above the scenic Alpine valley’s winter wonderland below. Each year a variety of concessions are available, and entertainment is provided. Or, find yourself in a thatched basket hundreds of feet up, looking down on the lofty peaks of the Tirolese Mountains on a Tannheimertal Valley balloon ride (daily at 10:30am).
Among the highlights of this colourful, eye-catching spectacle are the weekly Balloon Glows, which are held on Tuesday nights at 8:00pm (January 09, 2024, in Grän; January 16, 2024, in Nesselwängle; January 23, 2024, in Jungholz). The balloons stay fully inflated but tethered to the ground so spectators can get up-close views. Imagine rows upon rows of bulbous luminaries, dozens of feet tall, lit up from the glow of flames to the sound of classical music.
