One of the most original carnival celebrations in Tirol is the “Blochziehen” event that is held every four years in Fiss. This custom is deeply rooted in tradition and was declared a “World Cultural Heritage” by UNESCO.
Dating back to medieval times, this fascinating & colourful spectacle will be held in 2023 again. The focal point of this original fertility cult is the “Bloch”, an impressive 35 meters long stone pine log that is pulled through the village by masked revelers. The elaborate ceremony symbolizes the plough breaking up the ground in spring for sowing.
A huge crowd rallies to this event, often in freezing temperatures, and thousands of locals and guests await the appearance of the characteristic mask characters called “Mohrelen”, “Braxer”, “Schallner”, and “Witches”, dressed up in fur to better attract the attention of the passers-by. The parade is preceded by the local brass band and begins around noon at the Kulturhaus.
The The “Blochziehen” for Kids will take place on February 02, 2023.
