By the end of summer, the herds are rounded up for the great cattle drive from the high Alpine pastures. The coming home of the cattle for winter is a reason for great celebration in Mayrhofen in Zillertal Valley.
The cattle will return from their summer grazing grounds at Zillergrund, Stilluptal, Tuxertal and Ginzling to their winter quarters down in the valley in Mayrhofen. Decked out in colourful ribbons, flowers and bells, the herds will approach the village by noon and parade through the streets until 3:00pm. Stalls are set up to line the main street along the route the herd is to take by 09:30am. There will be entertainment, live music and stalls selling beverages and fresh, local produce. An absolute must-see is the grand folklore parade, which departs from Großhandel Rieser at 09:30am. All day long, bands will be playing their stirring music to the entertainment of all on stages, inns and hotels throughout Mayrhofen.
