As the name suggests, Lake Schwarzsee between Kitzbühel and Reith is a moorland lake with dark waters which reach temperatures of 27°C in summer, making it the warmest moorland lake in Tirol and a popular swimming spot.
Despite its greenish colour, Lake Schwarzsee’s water is exceptionally clean and even good for the skin thanks to its high concentration of natural minerals. The lake is surrounded by the spectacular Kaiser Mountains. Certain sections of the shoreline have been declared nature reserves, though there are still plenty of sunbathing lawns with direct access to the water.
The Schwarzsee isn’t, in fact, black (“Schwarz”) but instead a beautiful deep shade of emerald green. A boat hire service is available at the lake, while anglers are drawn by the large populations of pike, pikeperch, carp and tench.
The Schwarzsee can be easily reached via the Brixentaler Straße. Accommodation is available in the hotels and guesthouses nearby, while some holiday apartments have private access to the lake. Next to the lake there is a modern campsite with a spa and indoor swimming pool.
