Lake Lottensee is a fascinating natural phenomenon: it appears only periodically and is therefore not always available for a refreshing swim.
Situated between Mösern and Seefeld, the Lottensee is somewhat of a lottery! Thanks to a natural phenomenon it appears only a-periodically from beneath the earth’s surface, meaning that if you are unlucky then you will have to do without a refreshing swim. Another such lake which appears and disappears is Lake Wildmoossee, just a 30-minute walk from the Lottensee. There is no reliable way of predicting when and to what extent the Lottensee will form, though the local farmers have a poetic rule of thumb: “Viel Schnee, viel See” (“Lots of snow, lots of lake”). This is connected to the fact that meltwater causes the pressure in the underground caves to rise, pushing the water out of the earth and causing the lake to form. A lake to enjoy while it is around!
