Lake Heiterwangersee and Lake Plansee are in many way twins – indeed, conjoined twins. Though the Plansee lies in the municipality of Reutte and the Heiterwangersee in the municipality of Heiterwang, they are connected by a 300m canal. Together they form the second-largest lake in Tirol.
The water quality in both lakes is excellent and the water temperature is ideal for a refreshing dip to cool off on a hot summer’s day. Visitors will find modern facilities for beach volleyball, mini golf and many other sports in the area around the lake. Or why not hire a rowing boat or an electric boat and explore the waters yourself? Another alternative is a scenic voyage on the MS Margarethe or the MS Wilhelm, two large sightseeing ships which operate on the Heiterwangersee and Plansee from mid-May until mid-October and stop off at many picturesque places along the shores. There are also a number of hiking and Nordic walking trails around the lake catering for all fitness levels.
Scuba diving is another popular activity, with many enthusiasts drawn to the Heiterwangersee and the Plansee by the excellent visibility and diverse underwater flora and fauna. However, scuba diving is only allowed in only certain parts of the lake and with a day permit. Swimmers, on the other hand, can access the Heiterwangersee free of charge.
