The Hechtsee near Kufstein, which literally translates as Pike Lake, is a charming body of water at the foot of the Thierberg mountain in the Brandenberg Alps, close to the border between Tirol and Bavaria.
Nestling between thick mountain forests, the Hechtsee is the ideal place to get away from it all and enjoy a day in untouched natural surroundings.
There are plenty of sporting attractions on offer, including beach volleyball, water volleyball, table tennis and a large playground for children as well as a network of running and Nordic walking trails around the lake. One of the most popular walks in the region is the 4-Seen-Wanderung, which starts on the right-hand shore of the Lake Hechtsee and leads past three further lakes: the Egelsee, Längsee and Pfrillsee. After all that activity, why not cool off with a dip in the lake followed by a hearty meal at the Seearena Hechtsee Kufstein restaurant serving excellent local food?
The Hechtsee covers an area of 0.28 square kilometres and is 57 metres deep thanks to a two-metre-high dam wall which forms a natural reservoir. Last but not least, are there actually any pike in Pike Lake? Of course – as well as many other species of fish. In fact, legend has it that there is even a mermaid by the name of “Hechta” living in the lake who appears only very rarely. Keep your eyes peeled and you might even be lucky enough to see her swim past.
