This swimming lake near the village of Umhausen in the Ötztal Valley is proof that good things do indeed come in small packages. It is surrounded on all sides by the mighty 3,000m peaks of the Ötztal and Stubai Alps and offers magnificent views of some of the most spectacular summits in the Eastern Alps.
Covering 12,000m², the sports and leisure area on the shores of the lake includes spacious sunbathing lawns, a large playground, a beach volleyball court and tennis courts. The surrounding mountains are a haven for hikers, mountain bikers, rock climbers and mountaineers, while those interested in local history can visit the Ötzi Museum telling the story of Ötzi the Iceman, a Copper Age man whose body was found perfectly preserved in the glacier ice high up in the Ötztal Alps.
During the warm summer months the water temperature reaches a pleasant 24°C. The lake is fed by a natural mountain spring, whose ice cold waters are the ideal place for an invigorating and revitalising session of Kneipp therapy before it flows into the lake and is warmed there by the sunshine. Kneipp therapy involves submerging the arms and legs in cold water to stimulate the body’s circulation. There are several opportunities to do so along the Waalweg hiking trail leading towards the Stuibenfall waterfall. The lakeside pizzeria serves good food garnished with excellent views.
The Kneipp facilities are accessible free of charge. Access is free for holders of the Ötztal Inside Summer Card. The lake is a Regio Card Bonus Partner. A lifeguard is present to answer any questions and keep an eye on things.
