Flanked by the Hahnenkamm mountain on one side and the Kitzbüheler Horn mountain on the other, the cable cars in the world-class ski resort of Kitzbühel are also open in summer and give visitors quick and easy access to a world full of fauna, flora, activities and wonderful views.
The cable car ride from the valley (763 metres) to the top of the Kitzbüheler Horn mountain (1,996 metres) takes visitors into a new climate zone. Up at the top, just a short walk from the cable car station, you will find an alpine garden home to more than 400 plant species native to both the Alps as well as other mountainous regions of the world such as the Himalayas. Just a stone's throw from the garden is the Karstweg, a walking trail leading past a number of cave-like structures in the mountain. Early birds keen on experiencing the sunrise from the top of the mountain can from mid-July until mid-September take the dawn cable car ride up to the top, watch the sun rise from behind the mountains and then enjoy a hearty breakfast in the restaurant.
There is also plenty to discover on the other main mountain above Kitzbühel, the Hahnenkamm (1,712 metres). Fans of downhill skiing simply have to go to the Streif downhill course, where each January the world's best skiers do battle. There is a 3.8-kilometre walking trail in summer taking in the most legendary bits of the run such as the Mausefalle. A spectacular experience that will give you even greater respect for the skiers who take on this course. Don't forget to check out the Streif Viewing, a series of four large monitors showing spectacular scenes from ski races here down the years. Also well worth a visit is the KitzPanorama, a viewing platform near the top of the cable car station, and the Panorama Trail.
