If you’re coming for a visit of Hohe Tauern National Park, the visitor’s center at Matrei is the place where you can get information, orientation and that offers exhibits on this high Alpine region, wildlife, and history.
Exhibition space at the National Park Visitor’s Center in Matrei is spread across two floors. One of the main highlights is a projection screen showing visitors the majestic glaciers around Großglockner, Austria’s tallest mountain, and adjacent Großvenediger. Details are provided on how animals survive in this harshest of environments. Visitors will also learn a lot about the history of Hohe Tauern Mountain Range, from their cult and hunting origins in the Stone Age all the way through to the development of farming. As well as the permanent exhibitions, there are temporary exhibitions that change once a year. All of the exhibitions are interactive and hands-on, making the Matrei visitor’s center ideal for visitors of all ages.
