Heading up Glockner Road at Kals, the behemoth 3,798-meter peak of Großglockner, Austria’s highest mountain, towers around you. Just off the hamlet of Kals/Burg, the Kals Glockner Road winds into Ködnitztal Valley and up the mountain in switchbacks. Along seven meandering kilometers, you can catch views of glacier-carved valleys, daunting peak summits and wild and rugged countryside. The scenic drive ends at the car park of Lucknerhaus Lodge, 1,920 meters above sea level. Known for its expansive views, more peaks that stand more than 3,000 meters above sea level can be seen from this spot than from any other place in the country, including the tallest, Großglockner. Lucknerhaus Lodge, deeply rooted in tradition, is a perfect place to enjoy authentic Tirolese hospitality and to savor hearty delicacies.
