Snowy forests, gently rolling mountains, peace and quiet – Wildschönau is the perfect place for winter walking. There are well-maintained winter walking trails both down in the valleys and up in the mountains. Here is our guide to the best spots in the region.
Our first recommendation is the walk up to the Jausenstation Foisching hut in Niederau, where visitors young and old can watch wild animals such as deer feeding. The Schönangerrunde, on the other hand, is perfect for those who want to get away from it all and enjoy the peace and quiet of the winter landscape. It leads past the Großer Beil, at 2,309 metres the highest mountain in the valley, and is suitable for families with children. Another walk which families will enjoy heads around the Thierbacher Kogel mountain, leaving from the village of Thierbach. Here, too, the route is almost flat, but the views are nevertheless wonderful. All in all there are around 40 kilometes of winter walking trails in Wildschönau.
Tip! Visitors wishing to enjoy the full winter experience should book an adventure with local mountain guide Rainer Schoner. Options include night walks, snowshoe walks and walks around the Foisching deer park each Thursday, where walkers have the chance to see some of the local wildlife and learn plenty about the flora and fauna of the region from Rainer himself.
