Pretty chocolate-box villages combined with one of Austria's largest ski resorts make the Wildschönau region perfect for families with children. While the kids are learning to ski, parents can head off and explore the funpark and freeriding.
The Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau is famous for its traditional family-friendly ski resorts. In the region's many villages there are lots of small lifts and gentle slopes ideal for those taking their first tentative turns on snow. Further up the mountain there are more challenging pistes as well as funslopes and funparks. Schatzberg is one of the most popular resorts with families, with easy skiing at the bottom and plenty of fun for all ages in the Family Park at the Thalerkogllift.
Winter hiking is a great alternative activity for families. From the mid-way station of the Schatzbergbahn cable car there is a hiking trail to Auffach. On bad weather days there is the 1st Wood Museum of Tirol in Auffach. Tobogganing is available on the Rodelbahn Lanerköpfl toboggan run in Niederau. There are also courses on how to build an igloo.
Special family deals. Children born in or since 2007 receive a free ski pass between 18 March and 10 April 2023. Young children born in or since 2016 can ski for free all winter in the company of an adult.
Children's Ski Schools. The 1. Skischule Wildschönau in Niederau offers children’s lessons with friendly mascot the Bobo the Penguin. Highlights include a large practice area with a conveyor belt ski lift, a ski carousel and a fun slide.
