With its perfect altitude and 130 kilometres of well-maintained winter hiking trails, it is no wonder that the Tiroler Oberland region has established itself in recent years as a favourite among holidaymakers looking for more than just skiing and snowboarding.
One of the most beautiful places to visit is the Pfundser Tschey, a small remote valley which can be accessed on snowshoes. Or why not explore the Kaunertal Nature Park in the company of a local guide and learn about the flora and fauna native to the Alps?
Tip!
The Mutzkopf mountain above Nauders is a winter wonderland for walkers and cross-country skiers. There are five walking and cross-country skiing trails in this former ski resort which has now closed. We recommend the 10.5-kilometre-long Seenrunde leading past two lakes: the Schwarzer See and the Grüner See. Details: Region Nauders-Tiroler Oberland-Kaunertal, +43.50225.100, www.tiroler-oberland.com IMPORTANT! The Mutzkopflift is only open on Wednesdays from 10:30 until 14:00 and 17:30 until 20:00.
The Your Winter Moments Activity Programme in the region around Pfunds in the Tirolean Oberland offers plenty of highlights during the cold months of the year. There are dedicated bus shuttles taking visitors to some of the most beautiful spots for winter walking. The tourism office has winter walking backpacks full of everything you need. There are also five special guided winter walks, each with its own theme. On full moon nights the region organises a picknick under the starry sky. On Wednesday you can combine walking and tobogganing, while on Tuesday there is an introduction to snowshoe hiking. Each Thursday there is a guided snowshoe hike into the beautiful Pfundser Tschey valley. Last but not least, families will love the guided walk through the spooky forest on the Kobl mountain all the way up to the wild animal feeding site.
