Skiers and snowboarders visiting East Tirol are spoilt for choice. The region has six ski areas, including a large resort between the villages of Matrei and Kals offering wonderful views of Austria's highest mountain, the 3,798-metre-tall Großglockner.
Stretching all the way from Kals to Matrei, the Großglockner Resort is the largest ski area in East Tirol and has pistes catering for all ages and abilities. It can be accessed from both Kals and Matrei. The resort's altitude of up to 2,426 metres above sea level ensures excellent snow cover throughout the season. The region's largest town, Lienz, has two ski resorts: Hochstein and Zettersfeld. Zettersfeld offers mostly easy terrain and is therefore ideal for families with children. Hochstein is more of a challenge with steep slopes good for avanced and expert skiers. Around 30 kilometres from Lienz is the Skizentrum Hochpustertal-Sillian, one of the largest resorts in the Pustertal Valley. Many of East Tirol's villages have their own small resorts such as Obertilliach, St. Jakob im Defereggental and the family-friendly Kartitsch.
