Spectacular views of the Dolomites or city skiing? The ski resorts of Sillian and Zettersfeld are different in many ways, yet both are ideal for families with children.
There are two ski resorts in East Tirol which are considered especially good for families with children. The first is the small but perfectly formed Skizentrum Sillian in the Hochpustertal Valley, where both adults and children will enjoy the excellent facilities and calm atmosphere. The beginners' area, known as the Winterwichtelland, is located in the centre of Sillian itself, while older children can enjoy a combination of skiing and activities at the Bobo Kinderclub and teens can dial in their tricks in the Yellowsnow Funpark. The second family-friendly resort is Zettersfeld in Lienz. Perched high above Lienz, the largest town in East Tirol, almost all of its pistes are suitable for families. The resort also features a Sunsite Park snowpark where young snowboarders and freeriders will find plenty to keep them busy. Zettersfeld has a number of traditional huts on the mountain serving food and drink. Their sunny terraces offers magnificent views of the Lienz Dolomites. A recent addition is the 400m funslope with a series of rollers, banked corners, jumps and tunnels.
There is plenty to see and do in East Tirol away from the ski slopes. Popular winter activities include full-moon guided snowshoe hikes in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Families will also enjoy the Osttirodler, a kind of mountain rollercoaster open all year, and the swimming pools at the recently renovated Dolomitenbad leisure centre in Lienz. There is also ice skating on the frozen Tristacher See lake and on the ice rink in Lienz.
Special family deals. Youngsters up to the age of 18 pay children's prices for the SkiHit ski pass, while children under 5 years ski for free.
Children's Ski Schools. The Wintersportschule Hochpustertal in Innervillgraten offers fun and educational courses with professional instructors - and resort mascot BOBO the Penguin! The Wintersportschule Hochpustertal in Sillian resort overlooking Lienz, the largest town in East Tirol, has long been popular with families and offers new courses every year. The Skischule Obertilliach offers a diverse ski courses for children and adults.
