The Mayrhofen-Hippach Region has lots of easy walking trails suitable for families with children, though advanced and expert hikers will also find plenty of more challenging routes to keep them busy. Keep your eyes open to enjoy some wonderful views of the glacier-capped 3,000m peaks in the Tux Alps and the Zillertal Alps.
Families with young children should head west of Mayrhofen and Hippach to the area around the Penken mountain in the Tux Alps, which has a large network of easy walking and hiking trails easily accessible via cable car. South of Mayrhofen there are a number of trails to leading to areas known as "Gründe", which are small valleys within the borders of the Zillertal Alps Nature Park. One of these is the Stillupgrund, where walkers can make their way through a gorge to a large reservoir. Another is the Zillergrund, home to the Hohenau-Alm known to locals as "Little Tibet". Hikers in search of challenge will certainly find what they are looking for on the eight stages of the Berlin High Trail, which takes in the glacier-capped peaks of the Tux Alps and the Zillertal Main Ridge. Some of the most famous mountains in the region are located on the Berlin High Trail, including the Hoher Riffler and the Großer Möseler. Equally beautiful and physically demanding is the Peter Habeler Hike to the Olperer Hütte. A little north of the hut you will find a hanging footbridge with fantastic views of the Schlegeisspeicher reservoir.
