A masterpiece of engineering, a twisting mountain road and a high-speed zipwire – the Schlegeis reservoir is one of the main attractions in Mayrhofen-Hippach, but this region in the Zillertal Valley also has plenty more to offer.
Located at the end of the Zillertal Valley, the Schlegeis reservoir is a huge expanse of water held back by a masterpiece of modern engineering. It can be accessed via the Schlegeis Alpine Road – a dream for drivers, motorcyclists and roadbike riders. Ever heard of the Christmas carol "Silent Night"? It comes from the Zillertal Valley! There is a museum here dedicated to this song and its history. It is housed in a 300-year-old farmhouse where the Strasser family once lived. Foodies should check out the Erlebnis-Sennerei Zillertal, a dairy farm and cheemakers. The Adlerbühne Ahorn is a birds of prey centre where eagles, buzzards and eagle owls feature in the regular shows.
