The Lechtal Valley's wild, untamed landscape appeals particularly to visitors keen who are to experience the raw beauty of the mountains. The Allgäu Alps to the north of the Lech river and the Lechtal Alps to the south offer a large network of paths and trails to explore on foot.
While down in the valley there are plenty of easy walks, higher up you will need strong legs and a head for heights to take on some of the toughest peaks in the region. The 123-kilometre-long Lech Trail follows the river which gives the valley its name from its source in the Arlberg mountains downhill through the Lech Valley over the German border to Füssen in Allgäu. All in all the trek comprises 15 stages taking in quiet villages and lush pastures, but also gorges with hanging bridges and thundering waterfalls. One of the best spots to admire the region from above is the Hermann-von-Barth-Hütte, at 2,131 metres above sea level the highest mountain refuge in the region. It can be accessed using a circular hiking trail starting in Elbigenalp. Advanced and expert hikers in search of a challenge can take on the Lech Valley High Trail. It has 18 stages between the Krabachjoch mountain on the border with the neighbouring province of Vorarlberg and the Hahntennjoch mountain near Imst. Hikers spend almost all their time at between 2,000 and 2,500 metres above sea level. Several stages of the Eagle Walk also traverse this region.
