Between the Kitzbühel Horn peak and the Wilder Kaiser Mountains lies St. Johann in Tirol – a popular base camp for challenging walks and hikes. The region is traversed by three long-distance trails.
The region around St. Johann is particularly popular with advanced and expert hikers. Visitors with good fitness levels and a head for heights can, for example, take on the first stage of the famous Eagle Walk, a long-distance trek crossing Tirol from east to west in 33 stages. Stage one measures 13 kilometres in length and leads through the nature reserve of the Kaiser Mountains to the Gaudeamushütte at 1,260 metres above sea level, where hikers can stay the night. Another challenge for ambitious adventurers comes in the form of the five-stage Koasa Trail. One of the best sections leads through the Kaiserbachtal Valley up to the Stripsenjochhaus at 1,580 metres. Last but certainly not least, the fifth stage of the Kat Walk begins in St. Johann in Tirol and ends in Kitzbühel. Those in search of something a little easier can explore the lush meadows of Harschbichl on the Kitzbühel Horn mountain, with the welcoming Angerer Alm hut serving traditional local food.
