Summer visitors to Kitzbühel can take on the fearsome Streif downhill ski run on two wheels. The Kitzbühel Horn is another steep mountain with challenging trails, but there is also easier riding suitable for families down in the valley.
The Kitzbühel region is perfect for ambitious mountain bikers. First stop has to be the famous Streif downhill ski run, where the world's best ski racers do battle each year. The ride up to the top is hard work, but the fabulous views and the chance to ride what is surely the world's most famous ski piste make up for all that sweat and toil. A relatively easy singletrack trail winds its way down from the start house to the bottom of the run. Next up is the Kitzbühel Horn. Located just a few kilometres from the Streif, it welcomes some of the world's best roadbike riders each year for the Queen's Stage of the Tour of Austria – with the finish line at the top of the brutally steep climb ascending 980 vertical metres to the Hornköpfl. In seach of something a little easier? Down in the valley there are plenty of gentle cycle paths and trails. Stage 13 of the Bike Trail Tirol, for example, is suitable for families and concludes in the village of Westendorf. There is also lots of easy riding in and around the villages north of Kitzbühel. On hot days there is no better place to cool off than the Schwarzsee lake. Aurach and Jochberg in the south of the region also offer easy riding ideal for families with children.
