Buzzing towns, local history and untouched nature can all be found in the Alpbachtal Valley, a region of constrasts which is home to Austria's smallest town as well as popular swimming lakes, art galleries and museums.
Water is one of the main themes in this region in the east of Tirol. It is just a short walk, for example, from the thundering Brandenberger Ache river along the Tiefenbachklamm gorge to the Reintaler See swimming lake. Rattenberg, Austria's smallest town, is well worth a visit with its charming medieval oldtown. Then it's time to head for the mountains, full of lush meadows, traditional huts and craggy peaks. Children will love the Lauser Sauser mini rollercoaster, while parents can relax with coffee and cake in the sun. We recommend a visit to the Museum Cemetery in Kramsach with its amusing headstone inscriptions or to the Tirol Farmstead Museum showcasing the harsh life in the region in centuries past. Last but not least, check out Matzen Castle with its impressive grounds and ponds.
