Nestling between between the foothills of the Kitzbühel Alps and the eastern slopes of the Rofan Mountains, the Alpbachtal Region offers visitors everything from sheer craggy peaks to lush rolling hills.
This far-flung corner of Tirol carries the official title “Genussregion”, a status awarded by the Austrian government to regions home to traditional produce of exceptional quality. One of the largest municipalities is Kramsach on the northern banks of the Inn, which has earned itself the nickname “Bathtub of Tirol” thanks to its four idyllic lakes popular with swimmers in summer. On the other side of the Inn lies Rattenberg, the smallest and at the same time one of the most charming towns in Austria. Its medieval centre with narrow alleys and artisanal glass blowers is famous throughout the Inntal Valley.
Hiking around “the most beautiful village in Austria”
Hidden behind a hilltop, near the town of Brixlegg, is the picturesque Alpbachtal Valley branching off the Inntal Valley to the south. With its traditional wooden houses and pretty flowers in summer, it is little wonder that the largest village in the valley, Alpbach, has been named the most beautiful village in Austria.
Wintersports enthusiasts are spoilt for choice in the Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area with its many pistes catering for all abilities. During the warm summer months the region offers hundreds of kilometres of mountain bike trails and hiking paths perfect for exploring the crystal clear lakes and sheer rock faces of the Rofan Mountains as well as the gentle rolling hills and lush meadows typical of the neighbouring Alpbachtal Valley. In June the mountains come to life as fires are lit to celebrate the longest day of the year, the summer solstice.
