The wonderful views of the crystal-clear Lake Achensee, glistening between the peaks of the Karwendel Mountains and the Brandenberger Alps, is just one of many reasons to visit this region around Tirol's largest lake.
From summit hikes and long-distance hiking trails to easy walks through flower-filled pastures and meadows, the region around Lake Achensee is home to an incredible diversity of attractions and outdoor activities. Top tips include the family-friendly walk from Eben on the shores of Lake Achensee up to the Buchauer Alm, a traditional hut at 1,385 metres above sea level serving hearty local food. Those in search of a challenge can explore several stages of the Eagle Walk, a long-distance hiking trail crossing Tirol from east to west. Stage 7, for example, starts at the Gasthof Waldhäusl in Steinberg and leads past the Zireiner See lake before crossing underneath the sheer rock faces and craggy rock formations of the Rofan Mountains. There is also plenty to see to the west of the lake, in idyllic valleys such as the Falzthurntal and the Gerntal leading into the Karwendel Nature Park.
