Mountains with a touch of maritime flair. No matter what the season, the holiday region around Tirol's largest lake offers a wide range of attractions and activities for all the family.
Summer visitors to Lake Achensee are greeted by an atmosphere few would expect to find in this mountainous region: sandy beaches, turquoise water, sailors, windsurfers and large boats carrying holidaymakers across the “Sea of Tirol”, as it is playfully referred to by locals. Thanks to its clear waters and picturesque location between the Karwendel Mountains and the Brandenberg Alps, Lake Achensee has long been a popular destination. Indeed, Austria’s emperors would often come here to escape the heat of the city and cool off in summer. Today, Tirol’s largest lake offers a wide range of family-friendly activities throughout the year.
Hiking and skiing high above the “Sea of Tirol”
The region is characterised by its diverse landscape. While Wiesing, for example, lies down in the Inntal Valley, 360 vertical metres below the lake, Maurach, Achenkirch, Pertisau and the idyllic village of Steinberg line the shore at the foot of the Rofan Mountains. Visitors will find an extensive network of hiking paths and mountain bike trails criss-crossing the Karwendel Alpine Park and the Rofan Mountains. Five particularly beautiful sections of the Eagle Walk long-distance hiking trail lead through the region. Golfers can choose between two courses, while wintersports enthusiasts will find four ski areas with a total of 30 cable cars and lifts. Last but not least, the Lake Achensee area has been named one of the Family Tirol Villages in recognition of its child-friendly activities and family-friendly accommodation.
